These style of games are few and far between and I hope that that can make a big comeback this generation. These are some of the best on the sofa, co-operating games ever. So grab a controller and a buddy and get ready for a good time!  Left 4 Dead (Series) This run and gun first-person shooter can be extremely frustrating at times. Like when you are grabbed by a smoker or pinned by a tank, but you (should) have helping hands at your side. Supporting your teammates while running for survival is crucial to make any progress. The tension, pacing and cooperation in this zombie survival game sets the tone, and it never lets up.  New Super Mario Bros Wii This one stays close to its roots while adding co-op and some new suits. You'll be annoyed after bouncing off a teammate to death a few times, but this gimmick can help you if you play it right. Everything else is just simple platforming fun and shows Nintendo's ability to keep the tried but true formula fun.  Halo (Series) The Halo games have always had an amazing campaign. Some titles added new game-play mechanics along the way, but "Halo: Combat Evolved" helped innovate the standard of a great shooter game. And having another spartan is encouraged and also part of the Halo experience. Every entry is easy to pick up and features various split-screen game modes (campaign, multi, firefight, forge) where you can play together.  Gears of War (Series) These games have not changed much between entries, but are all 3rd-person, action packed games that remain fun. The innovative cover system and simple controls also make Gears easy to pickup for someone who may not game often. Some levels will also feature separate paths, making for strategic co-op moments.  Resident Evil 5 The campaign was short and did not feature the best bosses, but for what this entry lacked in some areas made up for in co-op. It is a solid 3rd-person shooter at its core. Its also the only game on this list to embrace ammo, gun, and health sharing. The sense of teamwork and tension is RE5's biggest strength.  Portal 2
A series of problem solving, and trial-and-error is what makes up this game. Portal features an entire co-op story with unique stages to tackle. This mode is all about teamwork, where communication is key. Each player uses their own portals to help progress through sections of platforming puzzles. The game is fun, satisfying and can be played in short sittings with a friend.
