 In my short time reviewing movies, I never thought i'd run into a movie like Kingsglaive. The problem is that it's not really a movie. It is basically another piece of promotional material for upcoming game known as Final Fantasy XV. So I think it's important to say that if you have no interest in the game, you should definitely avoid this film. There's quite a bit to unpack here so i'll get the negatives out of the way. The story is all over the place. The main problem is that certain plot-lines are left unresolved solely for the purpose of being addressed in the actual video game itself. There is a story to be told here but it never really comes together unless you... buy the game. At least that's the idea, only time will tell if all the pieces fit by the end. The sheer amount of characters can be overwhelming, they just come and go throughout the movie without much sense. The voice acting despite it's talent, is completely hit or miss. There are standouts, and overall do well enough not to distract from the few things this film does well. Despite the many problems this film has, it's not all bad. Obviously the biggest positive for the film is the visuals. The movie is beautiful. Something that serves the equally beautiful action scenes that are peppered throughout the film. Which is why this review has been so hard to write. I'm not entirely sure why this movie was made, it doesn't stand well on its own and really isn't useful for anyone that isn't already invested in this game. I personally am very into the hype for the game. So I enjoyed the film. That said, as a fan of movies I couldn't necessarily forgive it for not being complete either. To put it simply if you're just looking for a good movie to watch or are not planning to play the game, then pass on this one. If you are a Final Fantasy fan or have seen the trailers/anime for XV, then give this one a watch. The visuals and epic action scenes may be enough to carry you through the convoluted political drama that weighs this movie down.
