Suicide Squad is a fun movie, plain and simple. It's a giant action sequence with nice little vignettes of character interaction and development sprinkled throughout to keep you from being overwhelmed. Comic book movies in recent years have focused heavily on one main thing, characters. Suicide Squad is no exception, and in terms of characters it knocks it out of the park. There are several standouts but surprisingly most of the Squad gets their chance to shine. That's something that's very hard to do in a film like this. The movie doesn't dwell too much on origin stories, but gives you just enough to understand why these characters ended up in their current predicament. Considering that the majority of the characters are relatively minor in the greater DC universe, it serves them well enough as I really don't think any of their origin stories can support it's own film. The main story itself acts merely as a back drop to let the characters do what they do best. There are a few twists and turns in the story, and they only seem to serve the purpose of creating interesting interactions and situations for the characters. The action is well directed and choreographed. Unlike other action films that resort to "shaky cam" or irregular angles to hide doubles or bad choreography, Suicide Squad presents the action clearly. Another nice touch is that there is an obvious effort made to showcase each actor performing their own stunt work. Now the music! To be honest, I could probably write another article just on the music. There is a lot of it, and it's all great. While the licensed music is on point and probably my second favorite thing about the film, the original score does a great job in it's own right.
If you are a comic book fan or just a plain action movie fan, there is something for you to like in this film. The movie moves along at a fast pace. If you aren't along for the the ride from the get-go, then you'll probably get lost along the way. If you aren't a fan of flashbacks or you need thorough explanations, then you might want to sit this one out. As far as negatives go, that's really all I can say without sounding too nit-picky. No need to turn your brain off for this one, don't overthink it and just have fun. So keep all arms and legs inside the vehicle and enjoy the ride that is, Suicide Squad.
