San Diego born and grown, Jadie Cakes specializes in baking deserts for any occasion. Multi-layered cakes, cake-pops and cupcakes are all available. Jade operates this small but booming business and will happily create anything you can think of. From entirely themed large deserts to more simple and elegant designs, and you can be sure your personal treat will taste delicious too! I did a brief interview with the young entrepreneur to see why and where this wheel started turning. Read below for some insight, and use the links to request a customer cake of your own! ET: When did you start making desserts and why?
Jade: I started in 2012, when I was determined to make my daughters 1st birthday cake. I kept at it and ended up falling in love with cake decorating. I'm completely self taught, I've learned everything from videos on YouTube, reading blogs and good old fashioned trial and error. ET: Are the cake designs your original ideas or are they pitched to you? Jade: I'd say it's a mix. Some designs are my own ideas or a collaboration with the client. When people are planning an event, they usually have something specific in mind, or even an exact photo of what they want. It's my job to recreate their vision. ET: From concept to completion, how long does this take? Jade: Each order is custom, so completion time varies based on size and detail. Larger, more detailed fondant cakes (lots of decor, piping details etc.) can be a two day process. Handmade flowers or figures can be made days in advance, so that is a bit of a time saver. ET: Of all your creations, which is your favorite? Jade: My favorite cake I've done so far is probably the 'VW Bug' cake I recently did. Lemon cake with raspberry jam filling. It was my first car cake and definitely pushed me to do something out of my comfort zone. I'm ready for another one!! Haha. ET: Has making deserts been more of a hobby or a business? Jade: Jadie Cakes started as a hobby, something fun to do while I was home with my daughter. Now it's turning into something I never thought it would. I'm making cakes, and other goodies for many types of events and I'm loving every minute. ET: Are there plans to expand or grow Jadie Cakes in any way? Jade: I hope so!! Right now, I work from home but I hope to be able to open my own bakery one day. I've been figuring out details on selling custom cookies online that would be available for shipping within the U.S. Stay tuned!!
